The Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) has significantly bolstered its technical leadership by appointing the esteemed chartered insurer S.M. Ibrahim Hossain, ACII (UK), as its Senior Consultant. A luminary in the insurance sector, Mr Hossain brings to the association a formidable reputation built over decades of service in education, regulation, and corporate governance.
Mr Hossain’s professional journey is defined by his extensive 29-year tenure at the Bangladesh Insurance Academy, where he eventually rose to the position of Acting Director. During his nearly three decades at the academy, he was the driving force behind the development of insurance education in Bangladesh, playing a central role in training the next generation of industry leaders and setting the benchmark for professional skill development.
Mr Hossain’s expertise is rooted in a strong analytical foundation. He holds both a BSc (Honours) and an MSc in Statistics from Jahangirnagar University. Complementing his academic background are his prestigious international credentials:
- Chartered Insurer: Awarded by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) in the United Kingdom.
- Graduate Diploma: Successfully completed at the Malaysian Insurance Institute (MII).
Mr Hossain’s influence extends far beyond consultancy; he has been a key figure in the strategic oversight of the nation’s premier insurance institutions. He remains one of the few professionals to have served as a Director on the boards of both the Shadharan Bima Corporation and the Jiban Bima Corporation.
Beyond his administrative and advisory roles, Mr Hossain is a respected scholar. He has authored four books focused on the intricacies of the insurance industry and has published 12 research articles in recognised professional journals. His commitment to remaining at the cutting edge of global trends is evidenced by his participation in more than 30 specialised training courses across various international jurisdictions.
As the BIA continues to advocate for private insurers’ interests and seeks to modernise the domestic market, Mr Hossain’s appointment is seen as a vital step in bridging the gap between local practice and global standards.
